===================================
Rocking, rolling, raving. Thisis Chuck Berry,
still going strong after two decased playing the
music of a trend which lasted only a quarter of
that time.
Charles Edwin “Chuck” Berry is Rock’n’Roll.
Not just the Rock of the ‘fifties which so many
critics complained was played by exponents who
knew only three guitar chords and was written by
lyricists whose words made no sense. For Berry’s
spontaneous style is well-heeled . . . and well-
rehearsed. His guitar work has combined the “feel”
of the Blues with the technique of Country and
Western.
Berry’s halcyon days were between 1955 and
1959, although his influence continues to
dominate pop music, especially noticeable in the
style of British groups such as The Beatles and
The Rolling Stones who came to prominence in
the early ‘sixties. These groups established a fresh
audience for Berry’s music and his British tours
have remained at the forefront of the Rock’n’Roll
calendar to the present day.
Have Mercy, Judge is a strong Blues number of the
B. B. King style, but the lyric has Berry’s special
brand of irony that distinguishes his best work.
The lighter Fish and Chips and Christmas have his
typical personable approach. Some interesting
instrumental tracks such as Tulane and Flyin’
Home feature Chuck’s guitar wutg garnibuca and
guitar.
Gimmicks have come and gone in the world of
pop, but the versatility of Chuck Berry must not
be confused with a surrender to trends which have
threatened to engulf him. He has shaped his songs
to new situations . . . and his consistent appeal can
only widen.
